The head and neck region contains important structures including the larynx, salivary glands, lymph nodes and tissues of the throat.

Symptoms such as a lump or swelling in the neck, difficulty swallowing, persistent throat discomfort or voice changes require proper evaluation in order to identify the underlying cause and determine the most appropriate treatment.

Most neck swellings are caused by benign conditions, such as infections, inflammation or cysts. However, timely assessment is important to ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.

Evaluation of suspicious lesions in the head and neck region

Diagnosis

Assessment may include:

Detailed medical history and clinical examination
Endoscopic examination when required
Ultrasound or other imaging studies when indicated
Tissue sampling (biopsy) when necessary
