OTOLOGY

Otology is the specialised field of Otolaryngology (ENT) that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the ear, hearing and the balance system.

It involves the evaluation of symptoms such as hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness and vertigo, with the aim of identifying the underlying cause and providing personalised treatment based on each patient’s individual needs.

Conditions treated

Otology involves the assessment and management of a wide range of ear and balance disorders, including:

  • Sensorineural hearing loss
  • Sudden hearing loss
  • Acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma)
  • Ménière’s disease
  • Vestibular neuritis
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Tinnitus (ringing or noise in the ears)
  • Facial nerve disorders, including Bell’s palsy
  • Other conditions affecting hearing, balance or ear function

When should you see an ENT specialist?

An ENT evaluation is recommended if you experience:

  • Sudden or progressive hearing loss
  • Persistent tinnitus
  • Episodes of vertigo or dizziness
  • Balance problems or unsteadiness
  • A feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear
  • Facial weakness or changes in facial movement

Early assessment is particularly important in conditions such as sudden hearing loss, where timely treatment may influence recovery.

Diagnosis

The evaluation of otological conditions includes a detailed medical history, clinical examination and, when required, specialised investigations such as:

  • Pure tone audiometry (hearing test)
  • Tympanometry
  • Vestibular function assessment
  • Imaging studies when clinically indicated

These diagnostic tools help identify the cause of symptoms and guide the most appropriate treatment plan.

Treatment options

Treatment is tailored to each patient and may include:

  • Medication when appropriate
  • Canalith repositioning manoeuvres for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Vestibular rehabilitation therapy
  • Hearing aids and hearing rehabilitation
  • Surgical treatment when indicated
  • Collaboration with other medical specialties for complex conditions

Our goal

The goal of otology is to preserve or restore hearing, improve balance function, relieve symptoms and enhance quality of life through accurate diagnosis and personalised care.
